Revaluing an Icon: Midpoint in Sydney Opera House’s Decade of Renewal

Deloitte Access Economics commissioned a report examining the cultural, social, digital and economic value of the Sydney Opera House midway through its Decade of Renewal. The opportunity was to give a substantial body of research a visual identity that felt as distinctive and considered as the building itself.

Making the value visible
The report needed to communicate a large amount of numerical and economic information without losing the human and cultural significance of the Opera House. The identity also needed to express renewal, re-evaluation and a sense of looking forward.
A system with an icon at its centre
The Decade of Renewal became the central idea. An X motif referenced ten years, while a custom set of numbers drew from the Opera House’s distinctive sail forms. The resulting visual language gave the report a recognisable identity and created a consistent framework for data and editorial content.
From identity to information
I extended the identity across the report, using scale, colour, texture and the sail-inspired numerals to create rhythm and hierarchy. Infographics became part of the visual storytelling rather than simply supporting the data, allowing complex information to sit naturally within the editorial design.
The applications
The identity extended beyond the report into digital, print and physical applications, creating a broader visual system around the Decade of Renewal story. Posters, digital experiences and merchandise allowed the graphic language to work across different contexts while retaining its distinctive character.
My role
I led the creative development from the initial visual idea through to the finished report, balancing the distinctive character of the Opera House with the clarity required for a data-heavy publication.
